Lagos Lawmakers at its Plenary session on Thursday, 21st August, 2025, unanimously adopted a resolution, reaffirming the recognition and annual celebration of ISESE Day every 20th of August in the State.The House stressed the importance of involving children and youths in the activities, thereby ensuring the continuity and survival of the Yoruba culture in the face of modernization and globalization. Further asserted that ISESE Day is not merely a festival but a confirmation of identity, indigenous values, and a call to preserve the rich heritage of the ancestors in the State. Moving the motion on the Floor of the House, Hon. Bonu Solomon, representing Badagry Constituency II, stated that ISESE Day is a cultural and religious festival that recognizes, honors, and preserves the traditional heritage of the Yoruba people, while also fostering unity and cultural tourism.In adopting the motion as a resolution, the House cited Section 38(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which guarantees the right of every person to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion.The House commended Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for approving August 20th as the official date for the annual celebration and called on him to direct some relevant Commissioners to; as a matter of urgency, mandate Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas to actively facilitate the commemoration with community-based events and public enlightenment; to give necessary support, particularly in the areas of security, logistics, and mobilization within their domains during the celebration of ISESE Day.Also, the House directs the Commissioner, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture to allocate resources for the promotion and sustenance of ISESE Day and the Ministry of Information, Strategy and Security to ensure adequate sensitization and awareness creation for the public. The Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who presided over the Plenary, congratulated traditional religion practitioners, leaders, and cultural custodians on the successful celebration of the 2025 edition of ISESE Day and assured them of the Assembly’s continuous support for the preservation of the Yoruba heritage.
