Lagos Lawmakers unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing the annual celebration of ISESE Day on August 20th at the plenary held on Thursday, Aug 21, presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon (Dr) Mudashiru Obasa.
The House cited Section 38(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which guarantees the right of every person to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion in adoption of the annual celebration.
The prime mover of the motion, Hon. Bonu Solomon of Badagry Constituency II, emphasized that ISESE Day is a cultural and religious festival that recognizes, honours, and preserves the traditional heritage of the Yoruba people, while also fostering unity and cultural tourism.
According to him, ISESE Day is not only a celebration, but a reaffirmation of identity and indigenous values while promoting cultural tourism and unity.
The lawmakers stressed the importance of involving children and youths in the activities, thereby ensuring the continuity and survival of Yoruba culture in the face of modernization and globalization.
The House praised Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for officially designating August 20th as ISESE Day and called for local governments to facilitate community-based events, ensuring security and logistics during the celebration.
Speaker Obasa congratulated traditional religion practitioners, leaders, and cultural custodians on the successful celebration of the 2025 edition of ISESE Day and assured them of the Assembly’s continuous support for the preservation of the Yoruba heritage.
Heence, the house directed the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture to promote the day, along with the Ministry of Information for public awareness and sensitization.
In a somber tone, the Assembly also mourned the passing of a distinguished former member, Hon. Victor Olusegun Akande, who represented Ojo Constituency I and served as Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petitions, and LASIEC in the 9th Assembly.
Hon. Tijani Surajudeen and other members described him as an exemplary legislator known for his commitment to public service.
Hon. Femi Saheed and Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu paid tributes to his principled character, highlighting the need for better support for former lawmakers in times of need.
Hon. Tobun Abiodun, representing Epe Constituency I, stressed the need to revisit the Law that ensures adequate welfare and support for former lawmakers in times of need, especially in matters relating to health. He emphasized that such measures would serve as a lasting legacy in honor of committed legislators.
Other members of the House also acknowledged his invaluable contributions to the legislative arm and paid glowing tributes to his legacy of service.
Speaker Obasa acknowledged Akande’s contributions as a lawmaker and expressed heartfelt condolences to his family and constituents, standing in solidarity with all affected by this loss.
